if: Yon Astounding Castle! of some sort

An Adrift game in IF Comp 09 by Tiberius Thingamus

This is a review of Yon Astounding Castle! of some sort, which is an Adrift 4.0 game in the 2009 Interactive Fiction Competition, by Tiberius Thingamus.  I went to school with a Nero Claudius Drusus Thingamus.  I wonder if it’s his brother.

There are no excuses for getting stuck in this game.

This is a quest for treasure (and treasure-like things) in the titular castle and its extensive dungeons, narrated in a style more associated with the King James Bible than with treasure-hunting adventurers and the videogames they have inspired.  It could very easily have been a tremendously lame one-joke game.  Instead all the Ye Olde tomfoolery is the starting point for a solid and funny adventure that misses no opportunity to poke fun at the genre while finding room for plenty of ideas of its own.

Special mentions should go to the “makery” a room where you can create any item you choose to type in (with the proviso that said item will only answer to the name of Fred), and to the “intricate object” which needs to be examined to the finest detail to give up its secrets.

There’s still a maze, mind you.

Technically the game is solid; responses are customised throughout and the cover art is almost certainly the best in the competition.

I was very impressed by Yon Astounding Castle.  I didn’t manage to find all the treasure, but I’ll certainly be going back for another look.

Rating: Great
